The UN Environment Programme has partnered with South Africa's Standard Bank and Germany's International Climate Initiative to develop a new carbon project as part of the fight against climate change in Africa. The initiative has already awarded grants to three "green" projects around the continent.

Conservation tourism company Wilderness Safaris has launched a public offering in Botswana and South Africa, to be followed by a primary listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange and a simultaneous secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange's Africa Board.

The African Union has endorsed South Africa's candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. South Africa served its first ever term on the council in 2007-08, bringing to it a strong track record as an "agent of change".

Two South African scientists have won the African Union's first awards for excellence in science. The awards were made during the AU's heads of state summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Sunday.
